SSANZ 2009 Race 1
The first of the three race B & G Simrad two handed series was held on
Saturday July 4th.
The Farr 727 fleet boasted a record 9 entries, the second largest one
design fleet behind the Young 88’s. The start saw a comfortable 10 to 14
kt breeze and near perfect sailing conditions… for those that were
fortunate enough to get “clear air” amongst the 35 other competitors, in
the small boat division.
The lead changed 4 or 5 times, in the leg to the first rounding point on
the race track “The Haystack”. This being the furtherst point on the
course, had Nathan Bonney in Quarter Pint leading from Leigh Miller in
Mumbo Jumbo, with Paul Lemmens in Wild a little further back in third.
Shortly after the first 3 boats rounded the haystack, a 25 kt squall hit,
enabling them to get a sizeable jump on the rest of the fleet. A few well
chosen waves on the second leg to Motuihue enabled Mumbo Jumbo to
pass Quarter Pint. The leg last brought different conditions again, where
most boats struggled to find enough pressure maintain boat speed, but
fortunately the incoming tide was enough to carry all through to the
